Unit 2 - KA2

Hormonal control of reproduction

QuestionAnswer
What is a hormone? A chemical messenger carried through the blood
What are hormones involved in? The onset of puberty, the menstrual cycle and sperm production
What causes the onset of puberty? The hypothalamus gland secrets a releaser hormone targeting the pituitary gland, this stimulates the pituitary gland to secret FSH and ICSH/LH
In males what does ICSH stimulate (puberty)? The testes to produce testosterone, causing the development of male sex organs and secondary sexual characteristics
In females what does LH stimulate (puberty)? The ovaries to produce oestrogen, causing the development of females sexual organs and secondary sexual characteristics
What does FSH in males stimulate? Sperm production in the seminiferous tubules
What does ICSH in males stimulate? The interstitial cells to secret testosterone
What is the release of testosterone controlled by? A negative feedback loop
Describe the negative feedback loop involved in testosterone production: High testosterone con inhibits the production of ICSH and FSH Reduced ICSH and FSH results in the drop of testosterone production Reduced testosterone con reverses the inhibition of ICSH and FSH The increased production of ICSH and FSH->+testosterone
What happens on day 1 of the menstrual cycle? Menstruation begins, the shredded uterine lining exits the body through the vagina
What happens around day 5 of the menstrual cycle? Menstruation ends, the uterine lining begins to regrow and an ovum in either of the ovaries begins to mature
What happens around day 14 of the menstrual cycle? Ovulation occurs, the egg travels along the oviduct towards the uterus in preparation for fertilisation.
What causes the menstrual cycle to repeat? The failure of the ovum to be fertilised
What does FSH in females stimulate? The maturation of the egg whilst in the ovary
What does LH in females stimulate? The release of the ovum
What is oestrogen involved in? The repair and thickening of the uterine lining
What is progesterone involved in? Maintaining the uterine lining
