SCI 7 Unit 5

Populations & Resources

QuestionAnswer
What is an ecosystem? All the living and non-living things interacting in a particular area.
What is a population? A group of the same type of organism living in the same area.
What is stability? When something stays mostly the same over time.
What is a sample? A small part that is meant to show what the whole is like.
What is reproduction? The process of creating offspring.
What is energy? The ability to make things move or change.
What is an energy storage molecule (ESM)? A molecule that organisms can use to release the energy they need to survive.
What is a consumer population? A population eats organisms from another population.
What is a resource population? A population that is eaten by organisms from another population.
K.C. 1: Within a population organisms are always... Being born and dying.
K.C. 3: If the number of births and deaths in a given time are equal, then the population size will be... Stable.
K.C. 4 (Part 1): If there are more births than deaths in a given time, the the size of the population will... Increase.
K.C. 4 (Part 2): If there are fewer/less births than deaths in a given time, the the size of the population will... Decrease.
K.C. 5: Organisms need release energy from _________________ in order to reproduce. Energy Storage Molecules (ESM's)
K.C. 6: Organisms in consumer populations get energy storage molecules (ESM's) from eating organisms in the Resource Population
K.C. 7: The more energy storage molecules (ESM's) available to a population, the more the organisms in that population can ____________________. Reproduce.
K.C. 8: The larger the resource population, the more energy storage molecules (ESM's) are available for its __________________________. Consumer populations.
K.C. 9: The larger the consumer population, the more ______________________________________ it will need. Therefore it will eat more, causing more deaths in the ____________________________________. 1. Energy storage molecules (ESM's) 2. Resource population
K.C. 10: Two populations can compete for the same _________________ population. A change to one of these _________________ affects the size of the other. 1. Resource Population 2. Populations
K.C. 11: The size of a population can be affected by any population that is connected to it in a ___________________, even if they are not directly ___________________. 1. Food web 2. Connected
What is an indirect effect? The result of one cause leading to an effect that causes one or more other effects.
What is competition? When two or more populations use the same resource, such as the same food source.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
