Mystery unit words
| Term | Definition |

| crime | something against the law |
| clue | anything that appears which could lead a detective closer to solving a crime |
| deduction | using the facts (evidence) to reach a logical conclusion |
| evidence | anything that helps prove who the culprit is |
| the culprit | the person who commits the crime |
| witness | a person who either saw the crime being committed or who saw something that happened before or after the crime that could help solve it |
| suspects | the people who have a motive to commit a crime |
| motive | a suspect's reason for committing a crime |
| means | access to the murder weapon;or what was used to commit a crime |
| method | the way the crime was carried out |
| opportunity | the ability to have been where the crime happened when it did; or to have caused the crime to happen from a distance |
| alibi | the suspect's claim that he/she was somewhere else when the crime took place |
| crime scene | the place where the crime occurred |
| victim | the person the crime is committed against |
| red herring | a false clue or event used to take your attention away from what is really happening |
| accomplice | someone who helps commit a crime |
