| Term | Definition |

| Rotation | the time it takes the Earth to make one complete rotation on its axis (24 hour period) |
| axis | a line, real or imaginary, around which something spins |
| compass | an instrument that shows direction and uses a small magnet to show north. |
| shadow | a dark area caused when an object blocks light falling on a surface. |
| sundial | an instrument that measures the time of day using the position of the sun. |
| day and night | in the day the Earth faces the Sun and is lighted in the night Earth faces away from the Sun and it is dark |
| Orbit | the path one object takes as it revolves around another object in space |
| craters | bowl shaped indents or cavities on the surface of the planet that are caused by a collision with another object |
| moon | a natural satellite that orbits a planet |
| sun | the star at the center of our solar system and supplies heat and light to Earth, its gravity keeps the system in orbit |
| Earth | a planet in our solar system that has life on it |
| gravity | a force that pulls objects toward the center of the Earth |
| celestial body | a natural object that exists outside the Earth's atmosphere (stars, planets, asteroids, comets and meteroroids) |
| Revolution | Making a compete turn around another object |
| Earth's revolution | orbit takes 365 days around the Sun |
