Flowers/Fruits/Seeds

Bio Sci 104 Lab 7

QuestionAnswer
Angiosperms Botanical term for flowering plants
Name the four whorls in order from outside to inside Calyx, Corolla, Stamen, Pistil
Calyx The group of sepals at the base of the flower
Corolla The group of Petals just above the calyx
Stamen The male parts of the flower; the anther and filament
Anther The enlarged part at the top that produces pollen
Filament A stalk to which the anther is attached
Pistil The female parts of the flower; Stigma, Style, Ovary
Stigma The sticky part at the top that traps pollen
Style The stalk to which the stigma is attached
Ovary The base of the pistil that contains the ovules
What is a "perfect" flower A flower that contains both male and female parts; bisexual flower
What is a COMPLETE flower? A flower that contains all four floral series/whorls
Monocot flowers petals and sepals are in multiples of what number? 3
Dicot flowers petals and sepals are in multiples of what numbers? 4 and 5
What part of the flower ripens to become the fruit? Ovary
What part of the flower ripens to become the seed? Ovule
What are the steps of pollination? 1. the pollen grain adheres to the stigma where it germinates 2. The pollen tube grows down the style 3. The sperm cells move through the pollen tube to the ovule
What are the two types of pollination syndromes? 1. Wind pollination 2. Insect (animal) pollination
Do wind pollinated plants have big, showy flowers? No.
What parts might wind pollinated plants lack? corolla and/or calyx
Do insect (animal) pollinated plants have big, showy flowers? Yes! Visual cues, chemical scents, and food rewards like pollen/nectar attract insects and animals.
Fertilization: what is it? When the pollen germinates and the sperm and egg cells unite
What type of fertilization is unique to angiosperm? Double fertilization
What happens in double fertilization? Two sperm cells from the pollen fertilize two different cells in the ovule The egg and one sperm cell produce the plant embryo The other sperm cell unites with another cell to produce endosperm, which provides nutrients
Why are fruits and seeds important to the plant? They allow the plant to send their offspring to a new location which reduces competition with the parent plant and spreads the species
What is the pericarp? It is the ovary wall
What are the five types of fruits? 1. Simple fleshy fruits 2. Dry Fruits 3. Aggregate fruits 4. Multiple fruits 5. Accessory fruits
There are two types of dry fruits. Which one splits open at maturity and which does not? Dehiscent split open at maturity while indehiscent do not
Which type of fruits develop when many ovaries in a single flower fuse to ripen? Aggregate fruits
Which type of fruits develop from the fusion of the ovaries of many flowers on the same plant? Multiple fruits
Which type of fruits develop from the enlargement of a non-floral part, such as the receptacle? Accessory fruits
What are the three mail parts of the seed? 1. Seed Coat 2. Nutrient (endosperm or cotyledons) 3. Embryo
