Intro to Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Lithosphere | Rigid outer shell of the planet that includes the crust and the solid, uppermost part of the layer below the crust (mantle). |
| Hydrosphere | The water in Earth’s oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and glaciers, as well as the water in the atmosphere. 97 % of Earth’s water exists as salt water. |
| Atmosphere | The blanket of gases that surrounds our planet. |
| Biosphere | Includes all organisms on Earth as well as the environments in which they live. |
| Observation | Any information collected with the senses (sight, hearing, smell, and sometimes taste) |
| Qualitative | Describes the qualities or characteristics of something (not measurable). |
| Quantitative | Measurable or countable. |
| Inference | A conclusion based on your observations. |
| Independent Variable | The factor that the scientist has changed/manipulated in order to test the hypothesis (on purpose). It is the cause… |
| Dependent Variable | The result of what the scientist changed. It is the effect of what happened in the experiment. This is what will be observed and measured in the experiment. |
| Constants | These are the variables that remain constant throughout the entire experiment in order for a fair test to occur. They are what the scientists kept the same in both the control group and the experimental group. |
| Control Group | Serves as a standard of comparison. It is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, except for the variable being tested (independent variable). |
| X-axis | Where the independent Variable is plotted on a graph. |
