Intro to Science

QuestionAnswer
Lithosphere Rigid outer shell of the planet that includes the crust and the solid, uppermost part of the layer below the crust (mantle).
Hydrosphere The water in Earth’s oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and glaciers, as well as the water in the atmosphere. 97 % of Earth’s water exists as salt water.
Atmosphere The blanket of gases that surrounds our planet.
Biosphere Includes all organisms on Earth as well as the environments in which they live.
Observation Any information collected with the senses (sight, hearing, smell, and sometimes taste)
Qualitative Describes the qualities or characteristics of something (not measurable).
Quantitative Measurable or countable.
Inference A conclusion based on your observations.
Independent Variable The factor that the scientist has changed/manipulated in order to test the hypothesis (on purpose). It is the cause…
Dependent Variable The result of what the scientist changed. It is the effect of what happened in the experiment. This is what will be observed and measured in the experiment.
Constants These are the variables that remain constant throughout the entire experiment in order for a fair test to occur. They are what the scientists kept the same in both the control group and the experimental group.
Control Group Serves as a standard of comparison. It is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, except for the variable being tested (independent variable).
