Ch 12 Saturn Part 3
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Titan | Saturn's largest moon with a substantial atmosphere composed mostly of nitrogen |
| Methane Rain | condensing of methane, which falls down on Titan's surface |
| Channel | river-like surface feature |
| Subsurface Water | liquid water most commonly under ice |
| Gravitational Slingshot | use of gravity to change the flight path and/or speed of a spacecraft |
| Tidal Locking | when tidal forces have caused a moon to keep the same face towards a planet |
| Synchronous Orbit | when an object's average orbital period is equal to its rotational period |
| Orbit-Sharing Satellites | two or more bodies orbiting at the same, or similar, distance from their primary |
| Lagrangian Point | one of five locations in the plane of two massive bodies orbiting another where a third body of negligible mass can remain in equilibrium |
| Chaotic Rotation | unpredictable tumbling that non-spherical bodies in eccentric orbits can exhibit |
| Hyperion | medium-sized moon of Saturn with an irregular shape and a chaotic rotation |
| Iapetus | medium-sized moon of Saturn with a huge difference in albedo (reflectivity) across its surface |
| Enceladus | medium-sized moon of Saturn with a frozen surface, subsurface ocean, and geysers |
| Geyser | when water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air |
| Mimas | medium-sized moon of Saturn with a very large impact crater |
| Retrograde Orbit | some smaller outer moons of the gas giants orbit backwards (clockwise) |
