genome all hereditary information of an organism, the totality of the DNA
biological evolution any change in the inherited traits of a population that occurs from one generation to the next (that is, over a time period longer than the lifetime of an individual in the population)
fossil preserved evidence of life from a past geological age, including impressions and mineralized remains of organisms embedded in the rocks
lineage a chain of ancestors and their descendants
natural selection a mechanism that can lead to adaptive evolution, whereby differences in the phenotypes of individuals cause some of the to survive ad reproduce more effectively than others and therefore outcompete them
homology structural characters that are shared because they are inherited from a common ancestor
morphology the form and structure of organisms
phylogeny a visual representation of the evolutionary history of populations, genes, or species
genomics the study of the structure and function of genomes, including mapping genes and DNA squencing
mutation any change to the genomic sequence of an organism
genetic drift evolution arising from random changes in the genetic composition of a population from one generation to the next
phenotype an observable, measurable characteristic of an organism
