Chromosomes Cellular Structures that contains DNA
Gene DNA that controls the production of proteins.
Homologous Chromosome A pair of Chromosomes, one from each parent.
Gamete A male or female cell that is used for reproduction.
Haploid A single set of unpaired chromosomes.
Fertilization The fusion of Gametes to create a new organism.
Diploid A cell containing two sets of chromosomes.
Meiosis A kind of Cell Division that reduces the number of chromosomes in Gametes.
Crossing Over The exchange of DNA between Homologous Chromosomes that occurs during Meiosis.
Genetics The science of heredity
Allele One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Dominant Most influential, noticeable, or present.
Recessive Denoting heritable characteristics controlled by genes that are expressed in offspring only when inherited from both parents
Homozygous Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Heterozygous Having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Genotype The genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Phenotype The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Law of Segregation When an organism makes gametes, each gamete receives just one gene copy, which is selected randomly.
Hybrid The offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties.
Law of Independent Assortment Different genes independently separate from one another when reproductive cells develop.
