8-Sci-4.1-Relative Dating

relative dating the process of determining if an event or object is older or younger than another event or object
sedimentary rock rocks that form when new sediments are deposited on top of older rock
law of superposition the principle that states that younger rocks lie above older rocks if the layers have not been disturbed
tilting in geology, when Earth's forces move rock layers up or down unevenly, causing layers to become slanted
folding in geology, when rock layers are squeezed together causing rock layers to fold on top of each other
fault in geology, a break or crack in Earth's curst where rocks can move
intrusion in geology, igneous rock that forms when magma is injected into other rocks then cools
unconformity a break in the geologic record that is make when rock layers are eroded or when sediment is not deposited for a long period of time
law of crosscutting relationships a principle that states that a fault or a body of rock, such as an intrusion, must be younger than any feature of layer of rock that the fault or intrusion cuts through.
geologic column an ordered arrangement of rock layers that is based on the relative ages of the rocks, with the oldest at the bottom of the column
