Cellular Respiration

Unit 5- 10.2 Notes

QuestionAnswer
What is the first set of reactions in cellular respiration? glycolysis
What is transformed during glycolysis? 1 molecule of glucose and 6-carbon compound is transformed into 2 molecules of the 3-carbon compound pyruvic acid
What happens during glycolysis as bonds are broken down and rearranged? small amounts of energy are released and captured in other molecules
What is glycolysis? first set of reactions in cellular respiration during which a molecule of glucose is broken into 2 pyruvic acid
What begins the process of glycolysis? 2 ATP molecules
How many ATP molecules does glycolysis produce? 4 ATP molecules
In glycolysis, how does the 4 removed electrons get passed to NAD+? by a reaction in glycolysis
What is NAD+? Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide
What does each NAD+ molecule accept? a pair of high-energy electrons and a hydrogen
What does NADH hold until they can be transferred? electrons
How many ATP molecules are produced in glycolysis? 4
What is the net gain of ATP molecules produced in glycolysis? 2
Why is the speed of glycolysis an advantage? because when the energy demands of a cell suddenly increases
Why is another advantage of glycolysis the fact that it doesn't require oxygen? because glycolysis can quickly supply chemical energy to cells when oxygen is not availible
What do NADH and pyruvic acid (generated during glycolysis) become when oxygen is availible? The NADH and pyruvic "outputs" become "inputs" for the other processes of cellular respiration
What is the second stage of cellular respiration? The Krebs Cycle (The Citric Acid Cycle)
What is passed down to the Krebs Cycle from glycolysis when in the presence of oxygen? pyruvic acid
What is the Krebs Cycle? second stage of cellular respiration in which pyruvic acid is broken down into carbon dioxide in a series of energy-extracting reactions
Why is the Krebs Cycle also known as the Citric Acid cycle? because citric acid is the first compound formed in this series of reactions
When does the Krebs Cycle begin? when pyruvic acid produced by glycolysis passes through the membrane of the mitochondrion into the matrix
What is the matrix? innermost compartment of the mitochondrion
Where does the Krebs Cycle take place? in the matrix
What happens once the Krebs Cycle begins in the matrix? 1 carbon atom from pyruvic acid is split off to produce carbon dioxide (eventually released into air), other 2 carbon atoms from pyruvic acid rearrange to form acetic acid, which is joined to coenzyme A, the end molecule is acetyl-CoA
What happens as the Krebs Cycle begins? acetyl-CoA
