What are three organic compounds? Sugars, fats, and proteins.

What types of bonds does carbon form? Single, double, and triple

What are monomers? building blocks and linked by covalent bonds
What are 2 or more monomers formed? polymers
What are some examples of polymers? starch, plastic, and protein
What is dehydration synthesis covalent bonds between monomers that make polymers. Water is lost
What is hydrolysis? A polymer taken apart. Water is added such as starch to glucose
What are carbohydrates made of? carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
What is an example of a carb? glucose
What is an example on a monosaccharide? simple sugar such as glucose and fructose
What is an example of a 2 bonded monosaccharides? disaccharides
What make up sucrose? 1 glucose and 1 fructose
What make up lactose? 1 glucose and 1 galactose
What make up maltose? 2 glucose
What is an example of a polysaccharide? multiple sugar such as starch, plants and glycogen
What is glycogen? sugar stored in muscles and the liver of animals
What is starch? the sugar found in plants
What are lipids? fats, oils, waxes, and steroids
What make up lipids? 3 fatty acids + glycerol
What is saturated fat? maximum of hydrogen
What is unsaturated fat? Not saturated w/ hydrogen
What make up proteins? amino acids
How many amino acids are produced in body? 12
What do enzymes do? control reactions
What does catalyst do? speed up a reaction
What is a substrate where the reactions act upon
What is the active site? were it attaches. where the reaction takes place
What are nucleic acids? heredity material
2 molecules w/ same molecular formula but different structural form. isomer
What is cellulose? part of the cell wall
3 fatty acids + glycerol --> fat + 3 water dehydration
protein + water --> amino acid + amino acid hydrolysis
How many bonds occur in carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen? Carbon- 4 oxygen- 2 nitrogen- 3 hydrogen- 1
