Muscle Structures
Describes the different parts within muscles and muscle contraction.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Z disks | the lateral borders of sarcomeres and are the smallest functional units in striated muscle. |
| Actin | A contractile protein that makes up the microfilaments in muscles. |
| Troponin | A regulatory protein that lays within the Actin. it also binds with calcium during muscle contraction to allow the muscle to contract. |
| Tropomyosin | A regulatory protein that stabilizes actin filament allowing your muscles to relax. |
| Myosin | A contractile protein in the center of the sarcomere. |
| Titin | An accessory protein that allows muscles to recoil when they relax and prevents muscles from over stretching. |
| Sarcomere | The basic contractile unit of muscle fiber. |
| I-Band | the zone of thin filaments that is not superimposed by myosin |
| H-Band | the zone of the thick filaments that has no actin. |
| M Line | appears in the middle of the sarcomere formed of cross-connecting elements of the cytoskeleton |
