Why should a cosmetologist understand hair and scalp disorders and disease? To recognize what is treatable by a cosmetologist and what needs to be referred to a physician. To identify the types of hair loss both regular and irregular, and to recognize communicable scalp and hair conditions for infection control.
Which type of alopecia is defined as hair loss in round or irregular shaped patches caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles? alopecia areata
What are the causes of hair loss? pregnancy, insufficient diet, autoimmune disorders
When are people typically diagnosed with alopecia areata? childhood
A client expressed frustration with continued thinning of hair following a prolonged medical situation, during which a client did not receive adequate nutrition. What advice should you give The client should continue the improved nutrition diet and wait for results as there has not yet been enough time for the hair follicles to regenerate.

What is the recommended treatment for someone with trichorrhexis nodosa? softening the hair with hair conditioner
If a client has trichoptilosis, how would you treat them? Trichoptilosis is the technical term for split ends. Treatments include softening the hair with conditioners and moisturizers, but the only remedy is to cut them.
What hair disorder is caused by loss of the hairs natural pigment? Canities- The technical term for grey or white hair
What is pediculosis capitis? it is an infestation of the hair and scalp with headlice
What is the cause of pityriasis? pityriasis is the technical term for dandruff and is caused by excessive production and shedding of skin cells
