uniformitarianism | the theory that changes in the earth's crust during geological history have resulted from the action of continuous and uniform processes. |
catastrophism | the theory that changes in the earth's crust during geological history have resulted chiefly from sudden violent and unusual events. |
fossils | trace remains of an organism that lived long ago, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock. |
amber fossil | when an organism is trapped in tree sap as it hardens |
asphalt fossils | when an organism is trapped in tar that bubbles up to Earth's surface |
petrification | when an organisms tissues are replaced by minerals |
trace fossil | evidence of the behavior of on organism left in soft sediment such as footprints, tracks, burros. |
fossil record | the total number of fossils that have been discovered, as well as to the information learned from them. |
sandstone | sedimentary rock made of compacted sand |
coal | sedimentary rock made of compressed organic material |
