QuestionAnswer
What is mitosis? the process by which a single cell duplicates its genetic material
Mitosis gives a human a new body every ____ years. 10 years
a mitotic cell contains how many chromosomes? 46
What is meiosis? a special type of cellular division that produces the sex cells ( spermatozoa & ova)
How many chromosomes does a meiosis contain? 23
What are the primary sex organs of reproduction called? paired male gonads AKA testes (testicles)
What does the testicular arteries do? carry O2 blood to the testes
What does the testicular veins do? carry CO2 blood to the testes
what are the testes responsible for ? producing spermatozoa and testosterone
What are spermatozoa ? mature sperm cells
What are the seminiferous tubules? the location where spermatogenesis occurs
Spermatozoa is produced at what rate per day? 300 million per day
The spermatozoa has 3 parts what are they? 1) Head , 2) mid-piece 3) flagellum (tail)
What does the head contain? genetic material
What does the mid-piece contain? the energy (ATP) for locomotion ATP= energy in cellular level
What is the flagellum function? to propel the sperm up the female reproduction tract
What is the epididymis a comma shaped structure where developing spermatozoa are stored which is adjacent to each testicle
How long ( approximately )is the epididymis? and how long does it take sperm to travel this length? 20feet and travel time 20 days
The sperm travels through the epididymis to the urethra via what tube that has three names: what are these 3 names for the same tube? Vas Deferens, Seminal Duct, Ducts deferens
What is the surgical procedure for male sterilization ? bi-lateral vasectomy
What are two myths males used in order not to get a vasectomy? it will affect my sex drive (libido)=FALSE, and it will affect my secondary male sexual characteristics = FALSE
What is the Spermatic Cord? a protective sheath that surrounds the seminal duct, testicular arteries and veins ( remember there are 2 of these, one for each testicle
What is the Ejaculatory Duct? the vessel responsible for the expulsion of the sperm into the urethra
What is semen or seminal fluid? the liquid portion of the ejaculate
An average volume of semen per ejaculate is how much? 2.5-6 ml
If the average ejaculate has some 300 million how many reach the cervix and then how many reach the ovum? thousands reach the cervix and only hundreds reach the ovum
If the number of sperm falls below 20 million the male is considered what? sterile or infertile
Once ejaculated the sperm can live inside the female reproduction tract for how long? 48-72 hours
Why are large numbers of spermatozoa required to fertilize an ovum ? The ovum has a protective membrane that must be broken down by an enzyme secreted from the head of the sperm ( FYI=Acrosome Alheialoyrnes)
What are the characteristics of seminal fluid? 1)milky in color, 2)viscous 3)sticky 4)alkalitic 5)contains seminal plasim 6)enzymes to activate the sperm after ejaculation 7) prostaglandins
Why is semen sticky? it contains fructose which acts as energy for the sperm
Why is semen alkalitic? so it can neutralize the acidity of the vaginal secretion and urine
What does seminal plasim do? protect sperm from certain bacteria found in the vaginal tract and semen
What does prostaglandins do? promotes muscular contraction of the female genital tract
Where is semen produced? 1)prostate 2) Seminal Vesicles 3)Bulbourethral glands AKA Cowper glands
What is the prostate and where is it located? It is a donut shaped gland approximately the size & shape of a chestnut and located just inferior to the urinary bladder surrounding the superior portion of the urethra that produces semen
What are the seminal vesicles? a paired pouch-like structure ( there are 2 one for each testicle) approximately 2 inches in length and positioned to and at the base of the urinary bladder in front of the rectum that produced semen
What is the Bulbourethral Glands , also called the Cowper glands? A paired of pea sized glands glands( there are 2 one for each testicle) that are located just inferior to the prostate that produce semen.
What is testosterone? the male sex hormone
What do the interstitial cells of Leydig do? produce testosterone
What does testosterone control? 1) development , growth and maintenance of male sex organs 2) it causes the descent ( usually before birth) of the testes from the abdominoplevic cavity into the scrotum
