Ch 11 Jupiter Part 1
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | the Sun and all of the objects that orbit it |
| Jovian | outer Jupiter-like planets (gas giants) |
| Mass | total matter within an object |
| Radius | distance between an object's center and its outer edge (surface) |
| Density | the compactness of matter within an object (mass divided by volume) |
| Rotation Rate | time it takes an object to spin once (360 degrees) |
| Magnetic Field | accompanies any changing electric field and governs all magnetized objects |
| Great Red Spot | large, long-lived storm system in Jupiter's atmosphere |
| Atmosphere | layer of gas held close to a planet or large moon by the force of gravity |
| Zone | bright, high-pressure region in a Jovian planet's atmosphere where gas flows upward |
| Belt | dark, low-pressure region in a Jovian planet's atmosphere where gas flows downward |
| Zonal Flow | alternating regions of westward & eastward flow associated with belts & zones |
| Convection | constant upwelling of warm fluid and downward flow of cooler material to take its place |
| Differential Rotation | tendency of a gaseous sphere to rotate at different rates depending on latitude |
| Rotational Flattening | compression of a rotating sphere along its poles to form a spheroid |
| White Oval | rotating storm system like the Great Red Spot, but smaller |
| Brown Oval | long-lived hole in Jupiter's clouds that allows views into its lower atmosphere |
| Red Spot Junior | smaller storm system formed by the merger of multiple white ovals |
