Rock Composed of one or more minerals
Mineral A naturally occurring solid that is made up of elements.
Streak The color of crushed mineral powder
Fracture Describes how a mineral breaks in rough, jagged, or rounded shapes.
Cleavage Describes how a mineral breaks into flat, smooth surfaces.
Mohs Scale The standard scale used in measuring hardness of minerals.
Sedimentary Rock A rock that forms from compressed or cemented layers of sediment.
Metamorphic Rock A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by extreme heat, or pressure.
Intrusive Rock Igneous rocks that form when magma cools below the Earth's surface.
Extrusive Rock Igneous rocks that form when lava cools above the Earth's surface.
Compaction When layers of sediment are pressed together
Cementation The binding of sediments together.
