Topographic Maps Vocabulary

TermDefinition
bench mark a point on a topo map that shows one elevation
contour interval the difference in elevation between one contour line and the next
contour lines lines on a contour map that connect points of equal elevation
depression a ditch, or hole, where the elevation decreases towards the center
depression contour a low point surrounded by higher elevations
gentile slope slow increase in elevation on a mountain; far apart contour lines
steep slope fast increase in elevation on a mountain; close together contour lines
hachures small inward lines showing a depressed area
topographic map A map that shows the physical surface features of an area. (mountains, hills, lakes...)
topography the shape of the land
