Topographic Maps Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| bench mark | a point on a topo map that shows one elevation |
| contour interval | the difference in elevation between one contour line and the next |
| contour lines | lines on a contour map that connect points of equal elevation |
| depression | a ditch, or hole, where the elevation decreases towards the center |
| depression contour | a low point surrounded by higher elevations |
| gentile slope | slow increase in elevation on a mountain; far apart contour lines |
| steep slope | fast increase in elevation on a mountain; close together contour lines |
| hachures | small inward lines showing a depressed area |
| topographic map | A map that shows the physical surface features of an area. (mountains, hills, lakes...) |
| topography | the shape of the land |
