Threatened when the population of a species starts to decline/decrease.- 1st step
Endangered when the population of a species continues to decline/decrease- 2nd step
Extinct when the population of a species has decreased so much that there are no more of the species- final step
Nonnative, exotic, invasive species plants or animals that are not born in the ecosystem they’re living in and have no natural predators to keep them in check or balance. They take away water, space, soil, air from the native species
Barren poor soil with little to no nutrients; not many plants can grow
Metamorphosis the changes an organism goes through; start out looking very different from their parents; morph means to change. INCOMPLETE metamorphosis not as many steps as COMPLETE metamorphosis
Incomplete Metamorphosis 3 stages of growth: Egg-Nymph-Adult. Insects that undergo incomplete metamorphosis include grasshoppers, cicadas, cockroaches, lice, toads, frogs, some salamanders, mantids, cockroaches
Complete Metamorphosis egg, larva, pupal, and adult stages. The lifecycle of butterflies, ants, fleas, bees, beetles, moths, wasps; most insects, frogs, lobsters!
Photic Zone the top zone in water zones (oceans, lakes) where light reaches
Aphotic Zone the part of the ocean where light doesn’t reach; very dark and cold with few fish and plants
Energy pyramid A diagram that shows the amounts of energy that flow through each level of a food chain
Food chain Shows how energy moves from one organism to another
Carnivores Animals that eat only meat
Omnivores Animals that eat both plants and other animals
Herbivores Organisms that eat only plants
Food web Many food chains that show the interaction of organisms in an ecosystem
Producers Organisms that make their own food for energy
Consumers The organisms that cannot make their own food and eat other organisms to get energy
Predators Animals that hunt animals for food
Prey The animals that are being hunted for food
Decomposers The organisms in a food chain or web that break down wastes, dead or decaying organisms
Organism Any living thing, plant or animal
Cycle A repeating process or flow of material through a system
Stimulus Something that causes the activity of a living organism or one of its parts
Genetic Engineering when a scientist changes the genes to create a more desirable organism. Example: corn has been modified by food engineers to be resistant to specific bugs. You may see this on a food label- GMO: genetically modified organisms.
