SCI 7 Unit 4

Phase Change

QuestionAnswer
What is freedom of movement? The way molecules in a substance move around relative to each other.
What is kinetic energy? The energy that an object has because it is moving.
What is molecular attraction? A pull between two molecules that is always the same for a substance.
What is a molecule? A group of atoms joined together in a particular way.
What is a phase? A noticeably different form or state of the same substance.
What is temperature? A measure of how hot or cold something is.
How do the molecules of a solid phase substance move? They move in place.
How do the molecules of a liquid phase substance move? They move around each other.
How do the molecules of a gas phase substance move? They move away from each other / move freely.
Order each phase (liquid, solid, gas) from least energy to most energy. Solid, liquid, gas
Which phase has the least freedom of movement? Solid
If the molecules of a substance are moving around from each other, what phase change would occur if you added energy? Evaporation would occur and it would change from a liquid to a gas.
If substance is a liquid and freezes, how would the molecules of that substance then move? The molecules would move in place.
What are the 4 phase changes we have covered? Freezing, Melting, Evaporating, Condensing (Condensation)
What are the starting and ending phases during condensation? Gas to liquid
What are the starting and ending phases during freezing? Liquid to Solid
What are the starting and ending phases during melting? Solid to Liquid
What are the starting and ending phases during evaporation? Liquid to Gas
Would molecules move faster or slower if energy is added? Faster
When adding energy, which substance would change first, a STRONGER attraction substance or a WEAKER attraction substance? Weaker Attraction Substance
When removing energy, which substance would change first, a STRONGER attraction substance or a WEAKER attraction substance? STRONGER Attraction Substance
Would a phase change occur if you remove energy from a solid substance? No
Would a phase change occur if you add energy to a solid substance? No

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
