Lecture 7
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Magma | found deep within the crust and upper mantle |
Lava | found flowing from an erupting volcano |
Viscosity | resistance to flow |
Shield Volcanoes | largest volcanoes on Earth & are shaped as broad arc built from lava |
Tephra | fragmented material blown out during an eruption |
Pyroclastic deposits | accumulations of tephra |
Pyroclastic rock | accumulations of tephra compacted together |
Composite Volcanoes | cone-shaped & are built from a combination of lava flows & pyroclastic deposits |
Volcanic Domes | steep-sided mounts that from around vents |
Cinder Cone Volcanoes: | round to oval shaped & contain a crater on the top |
Maars | a circular volcanic crater produced by an explosive eruptions are filed w/ water |
Jokulhlaups | huge quantities of ice producing hoods |
Crater | a depression formed by the explosion of a volcano top |
Volcanic Vent | an opening on the surface through which lava & pyroclastic debris erupt |
Fissures | vents that are elongated cracks |
Caldera | a circular to oval depression formed during the collapse of a volcano |
Geyser | groundwater that boils in an underground chamber to periodically produce a release of steam or water |
Cooling | ash & gases reflect solar radiation |
Pahoehoe Basaltic Lava | low viscosity, high temp |
Aa Basaltic Lava: | High viscosity, low temperature |
Lateral Blasts | an eruption directed away form a volcano where materials are blown parallel to the surface |
Pyroclastic Flows: | avalanches of ash, gas & rock fragments that travel down the slopes of a volcano during an explosive eruption |
Vog | smog from the formation of acid precipitation |
Lahar | a large amount of material that has become saturated with water & moves downslope |
