Cells/Types of Cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | The smallest unit of life that can live on it’s own and makes up all living things and the tissues of the body |
| Multicellular | Having or consisting of many cells(humans, fish) |
| Unicellular | An organism made of one cell that carries out all the necessary functions for the organism(some algae, protozoans, some bacteria) |
| Prokaryote | A unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus, mitochondria, or any other membrane-bound organelle |
| Eukaryote | An organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus |
| Nucleus | Enclosed organelle containing DNA in the form of chromosomes. Found in eukaryotic cells. |
| Membrane | A biological membrane that separates and protects the interior of all cells from the outside environment. |
| Endosymbiosis | A symbiotic relationship where one organism lives inside the other. Origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts. |
| Surface Area | Measure of the total area on the outside of the cell |
| Volume | A three-dimensional measure of space occupied or displaced by an object, usually expressed in cubic units |
| Organelle | A subcellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell |
| Phospholipid Bilayer | A two-layer arrangement of phosphate and lipid molecules that form a cell membrane. The hydrophobic fatty acid tails face inward and the hydrophilic glycerol and phosphate heads face outwards. |
| Ribosome | A complex molecular machine found living inside the cells that produce proteins from amino acids during a process called protein synthesis |
