TCAs cause lots of side effects, which is the most prelevant? anticholinergic side effects
TCAs are contraindicated in patients with seizure disorders because of it's action to reduce seizure thresholds
Name two TCAs Elavil & Pamelor
What two neurotransmitters are affected by TCAs and how? serotonin and norepinephrine, both increased
Which category is 1st generation antidepressants? TCAs
Which category of antidepressants stops the movement of serotonin out of the synapse to allow the brain more use of it? SSRIs
Elavil is a TCA
Pamelor is a TCA
Celexa is a SSRI
Paxil is a SSRI
Zoloft is a SSRI
Lexapro is a SSRI
Nardil is a MAOI
This condition is caused by taking two SSRIs simultaneously serotonin syndrome
The signs and symptoms of Serotonin syndrome are mental status changes, labile BP and hyper-reflexia
The three main side effects of SSRIs are decreased sex drive, headache, insomnia
The use of MAOIs require patient teaching in what important area? avoidance of tyramine in the diet
What causes hypertensive crisis? when patient taking MAOI ingests tyramine
What are the signs and symptoms of hypertensive crisis? high BP, severe ocipital headache and chest pain
How do MAOIs affect neurotransmitters? increase both serotonin and norepinephrine
What is the main action of MAOIs? inhibits enzymes from metabolizing serotonine and norepinephrine
Because of their many side effects these two categories of anti-depressants are not used very often. TCAs and MAOIs
Wellbutrin, Effexor, Rimeron, Cymbalta, Trazadone & Desyrl are all considered to be in what category of depression meds? other
Effexor, Rimeron & Cymbalta cause what two common side effects? anticholinergic and strange dreams
These two "other" antidepressants cause dry mouth, drowsiness and n/v Trazadone and Desyrl
Which antidepressant causes a loss in weight? Wellbutrin
Wellbutrin is known for not causing these two common sidefeccts weight gain and decreased sex drive
What is the "category" for the first group of antidepressants ever used? TCAs
Because of lower side effects these antidepressants are used more often than others SSRIs
When you hear "can't see, can't spit, can't pee" what type of side effect is that? anticholinergic
