Cell Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Theory | A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things |
| Prokaryotic | cells that do not have a true nucleus; genetic material is not enclosed in a membrane |
| Eukaryotic | cells that have a ”true” nucleus; genetic material is bound by a nucleus. |
| Multicellular | Consisting of many cells |
| Unicellular | Made of a single cell |
| Cell | The basic unit of structure and function in living things |
| Organelle | a tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
| Cell wall | A rigid layer found only in plant cells |
| Chloroplasts | a structure in the cells of plants which captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food through photosynthesis |
| Chlorophyll | a green pigment found inside of the chloroplasts where photosynthesis takes place |
| Nucleus | The “control center” of a cell that directs the cell’s activities also known as “the brain” of the cell. |
| Ribosome | A tiny where proteins are made |
| Vacuole | “storage tank”, a water-filled sac inside a cell that acts as a storage area |
| Mitochondria | “powerhouse”; produces energy needed to carry out the cell’s functions |
| Cytoplasm | gel-like” material that holds the cell organelles in place. |
| Cell membrane | “screen door”, the outside boundary of a cell; controls which substances can enter or leave the cell. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | “transporter”, a cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another |
| Golgi Apparatus/Golgi Bodies | like a “UPS” station. It is a structure that receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell |
| Lysosomes | “recyclers”, small round cell structure that contains chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones |
