The sustainable use of Earth's waters

| surface water | bodies of water above ground |
| groundwater | the water that is present beneath the Earth's surface in the soil and between rocks |
| glacier | masses of ice formed by accumulation of snow |
| water cycle | the circulation of water between the oceans, atmosphere and land |
| evaporation | the process by which water turns into vapour |
| condensation | the process by which water vapour becomes liquid |
| precipitation | rain, snow or hail that falls to the ground |
| collection | the process when the falling water reaches the rivers and seas, or filters into the ground |
| hail | pieces of ice that fall from clouds like rain |
| cloud | a mass of water vapour floating in the sky |
| aquifer | a large store of underground water |
| shallow | not deep |
| wave | movement of the surface of the water caused by the wind |
| sea bed | the ground under the sea |
| current | a large mass of water that crosses the ocean |
| tide | the daily rise and fall in the sea level caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun |
| high tide | the tide when the water level rises |
| low tide | the tide when the water level falls |
| ocean | a huge body of water that separates continents |
| sea | a smaller body of water than the ocean, located near continents |
| river | a continuously moving body of water |
| lake | a permanent body of water accumulated in the interior of the continents, in sunken areas |
| river source | the place where the river begins |
| river mouth | the place where the river ends |
| tributary | a river that flows into another river |
| river course | the route of the river from its source to its mouth |
| river basin | the territory occupied by the main river and its tributaries |
| gorge | a narrow valley between mountains, typically with steep rocky walls and a stream running through it |
| waterfall | a place in a river where the water drops from a higher to a lower point |
| meander | bend in the river channel |
| upper course | the first part of the river near its source, where the water flows rapidly |
| middle course | the second part of the river which is flatter and the water flows more slowly |
| lower course | the last part of the river near its mouth where the land is flat and the water flows slowly |
| inland sea | a large saltwater lake |
| iceberg | masses of floating ice |
| mountain summit | the highest point of a mountain |
| well | a deep hole in the ground from which people get water |
| spring | a place where water comes naturally to the surface from under the ground |
| salinity | the degree of saltiness in a body of water |
