Diffusion osmosis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| diffusion | Spreading out of particles due to random collision. |
| osmosis | Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane. |
| facilitated diffusion | A type of diffusion involving ions and large polar solutes like glucose. |
| tonicity | Relative solute concentrations of two solutions. |
| isotonic | Two solutes with the same solute concentration. |
| hypotonic | More water than solutes. |
| hypertonic | More solute less water. |
| crenate | Collapsing of the cell membrane due to loss of water. |
| lysis | Cell swelling and exploding. The fate of an animal cell in hypotonic solution. |
| active transport | Movement of molecules from low concentration to high concentration. Requires energy |
| hydrophilic | water loving or attracted to water; phospholipid heads |
| hydrophobic | Water hating; phospholipid tails |
| intracellular fluid | Fluid INSIDE the cell (cytoplasm/cytosol) |
| extracellular fluid | Fluid OUTSIDE the cell including in the blood vessels and outside of the vessels in between tissues. |
| interstitial fluid | a type of extracellular material; fluid found outside of the blood vessels in between the tissues. |
| Endocytosis | bringing material into a cell. Cell membrane engulfs the material forming a vesicle inside the cell. |
| Exocytosis | taking material out of the cell; a vesicle will merge with the cell membrane, dumping it's material into the extracellular fluid. |
| pinocytosis | Type of endocytosis; bringing fluid in. |
| phagocytosis | Type of endocytosis; bringing solids in. |
