Dobrisky-Cardiac Module: Preoload & Afterload
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Preload has to do with | the volume of blood coming into the ventricles (end diastolic pressure). |
| This volume will stretch the | ventricular muscle. |
| When the volume and stretch are adequate the heart will | contract and move the blood to the lungs or into the systemic circulation. |
| If there is too much blood volume or if the cardiac valves are not working properly, the preload needed for the cardiac cycle will be | increased. |
| Define afterload | resistance the left ventricle must overcome to circulate blood into the systemic circulation. |
| What affect does hypertension have on afterload and the cardiac workload | They are increased. |
| What must be maintained to gain the correct preload and afterload | Balance |
| If the blood volume is too low or too high how will it affect preload | Negatively |
| If the resistance anywhere in the cardiac system is too high what will it cause | the heart will have to work harder to overcome the afterload. |
| What is the main goal for Medications for angina and MI | to keep the heart from working too hard and going into failure. |
| too much resistance to overcome increases | the preload and afterload. |
| too much volume causes | an increased preload. |
