| SONAR (definition) | Sound Navigation and Ranging |
| SONAR (use) | Sound waves are released to the bottom of the ocean and then bounces back to the ship to help measure water depth. |

| Lidar (use) | Light waves (lasers) and positioning system can help get detailed measurements but can only go so far using light |
