Microscope Parts
Parts and functions of the microscope
| Part | Function |

| eyepiece lens / ocular lenses | what you look through to see your specimen; typically 10X, but also come in other varieties |
| body | main section of the microscope minus the stand (base) or any illuminators |
| arm | the area of the microscope between the tube and the base; carry the microscope by gripping the arm with one hand and putting the other hand under the base |
| nosepiece / revolving nosepiece / turret | holds the objective lenses; rotate to switch objective lens |
| objective lens | the lens closest to the object being viewed; comes in different magnifications (scanning, low-power, mid-power, high-power) |
| on/off switch | controls the power to the microscope |
| diaphragm | adjusts the amount of light passing through the stage opening |
| stage | main, flat surface that holds the slides for observation |
| stage adjustment knob | allows for adjustment of the slide position forward, backward, and left or right |
| coarse focus | larger adjustment knob that moves the objective lens closer to or farther away from the specimen in large steps |
| fine focus | smaller adjustment knob that moves the objective lens closer to or farther away from the specimen in small steps |
| base | bottom support structure of the microscope |
| immersion oil | special oil used exclusively with a 100X or higher objective lens; concentrates the path of light to increase the resolution of the image |
| lens paper | special paper cleaning material specifically designed to be used for cleaning lenses and other glass components without introducing scratches to the surface |
| kimwipes | a brand of specialty paper-based cleaning wipes suited for cleaning laboratory equipment and instruments; should never be used to clean microscopes as they can damage the lenses |
| slide | rectangular plate made of either plastic or glass used to hold the specimen |
