Unit 2
Cells and Circulatory System
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Aerobic Cellular Respiration | Process in which cells use food and oxygen to make energy and carbon dioxide |
| Mitochondrion | Organelle (part) in the cell that does cellular respiration |
| ATP | Energy for our cells |
| Prokaryote | Small, simple, unicellular, bacteria, not a lot of organelles |
| Eukaryote | Large, complex cells with lots of organelles; includes animals, plants, protists, and fungi |
| Cell Theory | All living things are made of cells; cells are the basic unit of structure and funciton in living things; all cells come from other cells |
| Compound Light Microscope | Microscope with magnifying lenses in two places that uses light shone through the slide to view the sample |
| Circulatory System | Carries oxygen and food to cells, and removes waste products like carbon dioxide |
| Heart | muscle that pumps your blood around your body |
| Artieries | Take blood away from the heart; have thick walls to deal with the high pressure of the blood being pumped directly from the heart |
| Veins | Collect blood from capillaries and return the blood to the heart; walls of the veins are thinner than the artieries because the blood is at a much lower pressure |
| Capillaries | Tiny vessles with very thin walls that allow water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide to pass through easily |
| Plasma | Part of blood made mostly of water and dissolved materials, such as sugar, fat, and protein |
| Red blood cells | Part of blood that carries oxygen around your body |
| White blood cells | Part of blood that helps you fight infections |
| Platelets | Part of blood that helps form blood clots |
