Cells to Organisms

Unit 3 Review Part III (Microbes, Matter & More)

QuestionAnswer
What is a prokaryote? a single-celled organism without a nucleus or organelles
What is a eukaryote? a single or multi-celled organism with a nucleus
Are Eubacteria and Archaebacteria prokaryotes or eukaryotes? prokaryotes
Are animals, plants, fungi, and protist prokaryotes or eukaryotes? eukaryotes
What best describes bacteria? a unicellular organism that has a cell wall but lacks a nucleus and other organelles
What best describes protists? Any single-celled eukaryotic (has a nucleus) organism that does not fit in the animal, plant, or fungi family
What best describes a virus? A non-living infectious agent consisting of genetic material and a protein coat and only able to multiply inside a living host
Are viruses considered to be living things? No; they are not made of cells and cannot reproduce on their own (only with a host cell)
What is a vaccine? A preparation that is used to stimulate the body's immune response against diseases
How could you define energy? The ability to cause an object to change, move or work
Food breakdown releases these two things. Matter and energy
What process is explained by glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy? Cellular respiration
Do all living things go through cellular respiration? Yes!
What is photosynthesis? The process by which plants convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars and oxygen
What process is explained by sunlight + water + carbon dioxide = sugar (glucose) + oxygen? Photosynthesis
Where do plants get energy for photosynthesis? the sun
Do plants or animals have larger vacuoles? Plants
Which cell parts do plants have that animals do not? Chloroplasts and cell wall
What is an antibiotic? Chemicals that kill living microbes, such as bacteria, by breaking down the cell wall
What is cellular respiration? A process that provides energy needed by cells and releases carbon dioxide as waste
What is matter? Physical substances that make up all living and nonliving objects. Carbon dioxide, oxygen, and sugars are all examples of matter
What type of diseases do antibiotics work against? Bacteria
What is an epidemiologist? a scientist who trace the spread of a disease through a population
What is an incubation period? time between getting infected with the disease and the appearance of symptoms
What is an example of an antibiotic? Penicillin

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
