Dependence a type of relationship where organisms need items from their environment- energy, nutrition, & other organisms
Independence do not need others; can do everything on own to meet their needs
Interdependence organisms in a food web have this relationship; any symbiotic relationship- mutualism, commensalism, & parasitism
Life Cycle the steps that are part of an organism’s life from birth to death
Peril a synonym for danger
Tropical Rainforests warm & wet, near the equator, most precipitation, most species of plants & animals than other biomes, over 200 medicine
Temperate Rainforests not as warm nor wet as tropical rainforests; farther away from the equator
Buttress roots a tree root that extends above ground as an outgrowth of the trunk to support the tree. Mainly found in tropical rainforests
Prop roots roots that are as wide as the canopy (top) of the tree; you can’t see the entire root system
Fibrous roots roots that are like a tangled mess of hair and go in all different directions
Tap roots one long root that goes down very deep in the soil and you can eat it- carrots, onions, turnips
Conifers trees with needle-like leaves, pinecones, Christmas trees, pine trees, fir trees; do NOT lose their leaves in the cold
Epiphytes a plant that grows on another plant but is not parasitic, such as the numerous ferns, bromeliads, air plants, and orchids growing on tree trunks in tropical rainforests
Erosion the movement of soil to another place due to wind, water, ice
Drought when an area gets much less water/precipitation than usual
Flooding when an area gets much more water/precipitation than usual
Deciduous Forests less rainfall, cooler temperatures than tropical; loose/ shed leaves in fall to save water, food & energy; some species hibernate
Grassland tall grasses, few trees- don’t grow well because of little precipitation, fertile soil
Taiga cold, dry, grass, trees have needle-like leaves with waxy coating (cuticle)- conifers, forests, animals have fur for warmth
Desert dry, can be warm & cold, least amount of water, small plants & animals, plants have needle-like leaves to prevent water loss, store water, large root system that is close to the surface (shallow)to get the water as soon as it falls & before it soaks int
Tundra coldest and most northern; very little rain, permafrost ground- frozen most of the year; very few small plants with shallow roots
Limiting Factors factors that affect the size of populations & the # of organisms that live in the ecosystem: 1. Amount of food 2. Water 3. Space 4. Shelter 5. Air 6. Soil
Carrying Capacity the number of organisms that an area can support
Predators the animal who is hunting, usually for food. The predator hunts the prey
Prey the animal who is being hunted for food
