| atmosphere | mixture of gases that forms a layer around Earth |
| biosphere | Earth’s system that contains all living things |
| freshwater | water that contains less than 0.2 percent dissolved salts |
| geosphere | solid part of the Earth |
| groundwater | water that is stored in cracks and pores beneath Earth’s surface |
| hydrosphere | System that contains all Earth’s water |
| mineral | naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and definite chemical composition |
| rock | naturally occurring solid composed of minerals and sometimes other materials such as organic matter |
| water cycle | the changes to water when it evaporates into the air, condenses into clouds, and then precipitates down to Earth |
| precipitation | water droplets fall from the atmosphere in the form of rain, sleet, snow, or hail |
| transpiration | the passage of water vapor from a plant to the atmosphere |
| condensation | the cooling of water in the atmosphere changing from a gas to a liquid |
| run-off | rainfall that is absorbed by soil and travels to the ocean |
| evaporation | the process that occurs when water changes from a liquid to a gas, caused by heat |
