property a quality or trait belonging to an individual or thing
natural resource any naturally occurring substance (material) that comes from the Earth and is used by living things, particularly humans.
element a pure substance made up of one type of atom
compound substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded together
mixture a combination of elements and/or compounds that can be physically separated
particle a piece of matter
material a solid piece of matter
model a physical representation that shows what something looks like or how it works
pure substance matter that has the same chemical structure throughout
aqueous contains water
chemical change when a substance combines with another substance to form a new substance
physical change a change in a substance that does not involve a change in its chemical structure eg. size, state of matter
solute the substance that is dissolved in another substance (the solvent)
solvent the substance that dissolves another substance (the solute) to form a solution. Usually a liquid.
solution a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent)
flow chart a diagram which represents the sequence of actions in a particular process or activity
crust the solid outer layer of the Earth that sits above the mantle
mantle the mostly solid portion of the Earth's interior that is found between the crust and the core
core very hot very dense centre of the Earth
lithosphere the rigid outer layer of the Earth including the crust and some of the mantle (upper mantle)
sedimentary rock formed from sediment that has be deposited by air or water
igneous rock formed when hot molten rock crystallises and solidifies
metamorphic rock that has undergone transformation by heat, pressure, or other natural processes
rock the solid mineral material forming part of the surface of the Earth and other similar planets, exposed on the surface or underlying the soil
mineral a solid naturally occurring substance that contains little carbon
fossil the remnant, impression, or trace of an animal or plant of a past geologic age that has been preserved in the Earth's crust
weathering the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on Earths surface
erosion the geological process in which Earth's materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water
deposition an act or process of laying someone or something down or letting something fall
classification the arrangement of animals, plants or things into groups based on their observed similarities
landform a natural feature of Earth's surface
physical property features of a substance that can be observed or examined without changing the actual composition of a substance
chemical property a characteristic of a particular substance that can be observed in a chemical reaction
suspension is a type of mixture where solid particles do not dissolve in a liquid solution
sediment matter that settles to the bottom of liquid or gas
