Changes to the Land, Sedimentary Rock and Fossil Fuels, fossils
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Canyon | A deep ravine between cliffs that is most often carved from the landscape by a river |
| Delta | A triangular landform where a river empties into another body of water |
| Deposition | The buildup of land by the settlement of sediment and soil in a new location |
| Erosion | The removal and movement of sediment from one place to another by gravity, water, wind or ice |
| Landform | A feature on the surface of Earth such as a mountain, hill, dune, ocean, or river |
| Sand Dune | Hill formed by wind blowing and depositing sand |
| Valley | A low are between higher areas of elevation |
| Weathering | The breakdown of rocks into very small particles by gravity, water, wind, and ice |
| Glacier | A large, slow-moving, long-lasting accumulation of snow and ice that develops on land |
| Sediment | Sand or small pieces of rock broken down by weathering and deposition on land or at the bottom of a body of water |
| Earthquake | A sudden release of energy under Earth's surface that makes the ground shake or crack |
| Landslide | A rapid, downward slide of rocks and mud |
| Volcanic Eruption | A mixture of hot rocks, ash, and gas from deep inside Earth that explodes or seeps through a crack in Earth's surface |
| Particle | The smallest unit of a substance |
| Soil | A mixture of sand, silt, clay, rock, and humus (plant and animal remains ) |
| U-shaped Valley | A valley that is formed by glaciers moving along and down a slope |
| V-shaped Valley | A valley formed by flowing water |
| Freezing and Thawing | A crack in a rock can fill with water which then freezes as the temperature drops. As the ice expands, it pushes the crack apart, making it larger. |
| Cementation | Process of binding and hardening of sediments into hard rock |
| Compaction | Process by which pressure from rocks and soil reduces the size of sediments. Lots of Heat and Pressure! |
| Coal | A solid fossil fuel that is formed from the remains of plants over very long periods of time |
| Fossil Fuel | A natural, nonrenewable fuel such as coal, oil, or natural gas from the remains of living organisms |
| Gas | A flammable material produced from remains of MARINE organisms buried under layers of sediment found near oil deposits |
| Oil | A nonrenewable natural resource produced from the remains of organisms buried under layers of sediments for millions of years |
| Organic Matter | The waste and remains of plants and animals |
| Pressure | a steady force upon a surface |
| Decay | to degrade or break down into smaller parts |
| fossil | a preserved part or trace of an animal or plant that lived in the past |
| imprint | a mark or depression made by pressure |
| model | a limited representation of something that can help us understand its structure or how it works |
| preserved | to keep its original state |
| decompose | to break down into simpler components or basic element |
| diagram | information shown in a graph or in picture form |
| ancient | very old or having existed for a long time |
