Bays and Estuaries

EstuariesBays form where rivers meet the ocean
Estuary partly enclosed body of water along the coast where one or more streams or rivers enter and mix with seawater
Bay a body of water partially enclosed by land that is directly open, or connected to the ocean
Delta Estuaries that extend out into the Gulf where there are no bays
Barrier Islands long narrow islands of sand that run parallel to the mainland
Salinity Gradients freshwater inflow causing saltwater to fluctuate in salinity due to seasons, drought, tides and floods
Dredging clearing, scoping out mud, weeds, and rubbish
Channel waterway between two landmasses that lie close to each other
Tides alternating rise and fall of sea level produced by the combined gravitational attraction of Earth, moon and the sun
High Tide as water moves in and reaches the highest point
Low Tide as water moves out and is at its lowest point
Flood Tide the water rushing in as the tides rise
Ebb TIde The water rushing back out into the Gulf as the tides lower
Oyster Reef larger number of oysters joined together underwater
Filter feeders organisms that use their gills to strain tiny food particles such as plankton
