Organelles Quiz

Plant & Animal Cells

TermDefinition
Cell Membrane Structure that controls what moves into and out of the cell.
Ribosomes Found in all cells, responsible for protein synthesis.
Nucleus Control center of the cell. Contains DNA.
Nucleolus Dark-colored mass in the nucleus. Where ribosomes are made.
Endoplasmic Reticulum -Connected to nuclear membrane - Transportation system (highway system) TWO TYPES: Smooth - No Ribosomes | Rough - ribosomes attached
Golgi Body (Apparatus) Postal System/FedEx. Modifies, packages, and transports cell products to areas inside the cell or outside the cell.
Lysosome "Garbage Disposal". Digests wore out. Contains digestive enzymes.
Vacuole Storage site for waste, enzymes, water, etc. Large in plant cells, numerous small in animal cells.
Centrosome Organelles which serve as the main microtubule organizing centers for animal cells. Made from arrangement of two barrel-shaped clusters of microtubules called "centrioles" and a complex of proteins that help additional microtubules to form.
Vesicle Transport materials from one place to another.
Transport Vesicle Can move molecules between locations inside the cell, e.g., hormones or neurotransmitters - from an organelle to specific sites at the cell membrane, where it locks and fuses to release its content.
Secretory Vesicle A vesicle that mediates the vesicular transport of cargo. e.g., proteins from the rough endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus.
Cytosol The aqueous component of the cytoplasm of a cell, within which various organelles and particles are suspended.
Mitochondria POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL. Cellular respiration occurs here: creates ENERGY for cell.
Chloroplast Site of food production for plants (photosynthesis). Convert sunlight into energy. Contains chlorophyll, which makes plants green.
Cell Wall Structure that helps maintain the shape and rigid structure of the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
