Ecology the study of science that is about the relationship between organisms & their environment
Community the group of all the populations in an area
Habitat the place in which an organism lives
Niche the job or role an organism has in its ecosystem
Population a group of organisms of ONE species that live in an area at the same time
Biome a large ecosystem with similar climate and organisms
Biotic the word that means all the living things in an ecosystem- animals, plants
Abiotic the word that means all the nonliving things in an ecosystem- water, land, soil, sun, air
Adaptations any feature, characteristic, property that an organism (plant & animal) has to help it meet its needs & survive; very advantageous.
Camouflage when a plant or animal blends in with its surroundings and is hard to see by its predators; the #1 adaptation
Mimicry to look or act like another organism for survival so that other species are fooled
Nocturnal animals who are awake during the night and sleep during the day; adaptation to stay cooler
Diverse/diversity variety or differences in the same or different species
Inherit offspring get genes from each parent that determine how they grow
Mutation a change in an organisms genes that is passed on from the parent; there are good and bad ones.
Instincts a type of behavioral adaptation- A characteristic that an animal is born with; doesn’t need to be learned. The animal just does this. Knowing it needs to hunt is instinct, but how to hunt is learned.
Learned Behavior a behavior that an organism needs to learn- reading, sports, hunting, speaking, etc.
Behavioral Adaptation characteristics/features that are inherited that help an organism survive that do NOT have to be LEARNED, and aren’t structural/physical
Migration the mass movement of animals to a different place.
Hibernation an instinctive behavior that some animals due during cold months to save energy and do not need as much food.
Symbiosis any long-term relationship between different species- mutualism, commensalism, parasitism
Commensalism the relationship in which one species is helped but the other is not hurt
Mutualism the relationship in which both species benefit
Parasitism the relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed or dies.
