| Term | Definition |

| Independent Variable (IV) | the part of the experiment that is changed by the experimenter (cause). You can only change one variable at a time in an experiment. |
| Dependent Variable (DV) | the part of the experiment that changes because of the independent variable; you observe or measure this part to collect data (effect) |
| Constant | any part of the experiment that is kept the same to prevent affecting the outcome of the experiment |
| Control | the "normal" setup used for standard of comparison (the "natural" or changed state of what you are testing.) |
| Hypothesis | a specific prediction of a cause and effect relationship between the variables; Written in an "If ... (IV)... then ... (DV)..." format |
| Qualitative Observations (data) | uses words to describe somethings appearance, such as as color and texture. |
| Quantitative Observation (data) | uses numbers to describe information/measurements about an object, like mass, length or volume (add units of measurement.) |
| Problem (Testable Question) | a question that can only be answered by carrying out an experiment- written in question format and must include both the IV and the DV (ex. Does the amount of water a plant is given affect the height of the plant?) |
