|---|---|
| What are the main features of plate tectonics? | 1) They are constantly moving at a fingernail's growth pace 2) They spread from the center and sink at the edges 3) Convention currents beneath the plates move them 4) Radioactivity in the mantle generates heat |
| Where was there a nuclear power plant in NY? | Indian Point, NY |
| What is nanotechnology? | The branch of tech that deals with dimensions of less than 100 nanometers, especially the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules. |
| How are soils formed? | Through the weathering and transportation of parent material. |
| How are soils categorized? | They are categorized by horizons based on their composition and organic material. |
| What are some examples of biological weathering? | 1) Plant roots that grow in crevices 2) Plants secrete acids 3) Moss grows in cracks 4) Lichen |
| Where does chemical weathering most often occur? Name an example. | Occurs in warm, moist climates. EX -> Acid Rain |

| What were the human impacts of the Dust Bowl? | 1) Dust entered people's lungs which was linked to cancer 2) IQ lowered, mostly in children |
| What is the difference between soil and dirt? | Soil is a tiny zoo, containing a variety of organisms and organic matter. Dirt is dry, lacking nutrients. |
| What do earthworms provide to it's ecosystem, the dirt? | Earthworms break down organic matter and the holes they leave behind create pores in the soil for water and air to travel through. |
| How were canaries used in coal mines? | They could detect gaseous air before we had technology to do so. |
| What is considered good soil? | 50% solid, 25% air, and 25% water. |
| What are the factors that categorize soil horizons? | Particle size and composition. |
| How is chemical cycling carried out? | Organic matter and organisms in the soil. |
| Which aspect of nature holds the most carbon? | The soil which hold 2x more carbon than the atmosphere. |
| How does particle size affect porosity? | It doesn't ;) |
| How do small particles differ from large one's other than size? | Small particles have the highest potential for capillary action and low permeability, the opposite for large particles. |
| What is air pressure? | Air pressure is the weight of an area in an area. |
| What causes varying air pressure? | 1) Changes in temp 2) Altitude 3) Moisture content |
| Name some GHGs? | 1) Water vapor 2) Carbon dioxide 3) Methane 4) Ozone |
| Where in the world is the ozone layer most depleted? | Antarctica |
| How many MAIN wind belts are there per hemisphere? | 3: Hadley (30), Ferell (60), Polar (90) |
| What happens when air cools? Heats? | Cooling -> Expands Heats -> Compresses |
| What creates seasons? | 1) Angle of the sun's rays, their directness 2) Earth's tilted axis (23.5) 3) Earth's revolution around the sun |
| What are the two major components of climate? | 1) Temperature 2) Precipitation |
| What are some climate control factors? | 1) Latitude and seasons 2) Altitude 3) Proximity to a large body of water and ocean currents 4) Earth's topography like mountain barriers |
