What causes tides? The gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on the Earth
What is the difference between a high tide and a low tide? Low tides are when the water pulls away from the shoreline and high tides are when water comes in towards the shoreline.
What are the three parts to an aquarium filter? Biological, mechanical, and chemical
What is the importance of the biological filter? Helpful bacteria converts harmful ammonia into nitrate and nitrite.
What is the importance of the chemical filter? Removes chemicals and odors in the water.
What is the importance of the mechanical ffilter? Removes large particles and waste from the water.
What is a convergent boundary? When two plate move together.
What is formed from a convergent boundary? An island arc and a trench
What is a divergent boundary? When two plates push away from each other.
What is formed from a divergent bounday? A mid-oceanic ridge
What is the property of water that exists where air and water meet? surface tension
What is the property of water that has a moderating effect on temperature fluctuations? heat capacity
What is the total amount of substances dissolved in seawater? salinity
What method is most commonly used to determine salinity? density or specific gravity
What is the effect of the Earth's rotation on any mass moving across its surface? Coriolus effect
What part of the filter is established during they cycling process? biological
What percentage of the surface of Earth is covered by water? 97%
What percentage of water on Earth is saltwater? 71%
What are the top three constituents of saltwater? Chlorine, sodium, and sulfate

What are two types of special currents? long shore and rip currents
What is bathymetry? Measurement of the changing depth of the seafloor.
What is the shallow, underwater extension of a continent? Continental shelf
