Sedimentary Rock

Sedimentary Rock and Fossil Fuels Vocab

TermDefinition
Sediment Small particles of rock, soil, sand, and shell deposited by water, wind, or ice.
V-shaped Valley A valley with a characteristic V shape formed by moving water
Canyon A valley between steep cliff sides formed by running water, such as a river or stream
U-Shaped Valley A valley with a characteristic U shape formed by a glacier
Sand Dune A hill of sand created by the wind
Delta Soil deposited at the mouth of a river, usually in a triangular shape
Compaction Sediments that are squeezed together because of pressure
Cementation The hardening of sediments into rocks by pressure
Deposition The process of laying down/dropping off of sediments/materials
Erosion The movement of sediments/materials away from a place
Coal Formed from layers of dead swamp plants that are changed by heat and pressure
Oil/Natural Gas Formed form dead sea organisms that are changed by heat and pressure
Weathering The process by which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces or sediment
Sedimentary Rock Rocks that form when layers of materials and rock particles settle on top of each other and then harden
Landform A physical feature on Earth's surface
Glacier A mass of slowly moving ice and snow that carves new features and deposits sediments
Sea Arch A natural opening eroded out of a cliff face by waves
Moraine A mass of rocks and sediment carried down and deposited by a glacier, typically has ridges at its edges
Gorge A narrow valley between hills or mountains, typically with steep, rocky walls and a stream running through it
Ice Wedging Weathering rock fills with water, freezes, and expands, causing the rock to break into smaller pieces
Rock Arch A natural rock formation where an arch has formed with an opening underneath
Mesa A flat topped hill with steep sides
