QuestionAnswer
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
Atoms Building blocks of matter
Examples of matter table, air, door, water
NOT matter heat, light, sound
3 states of matter solid, liquid, gas
Gas -atoms move very fast and spread out in all directions, takes the shape of a container, least dense, found at warmer temperatures
Solid -definite shape and volume, most dense, found at colder temperatures
Liquid -atoms flow over one another and stay near to each other, definite/fixed volume, takes the shape of the container it is in
States of matter from most dense to least dense solid - liquid - gas
Define definite / fixed volume matter stays the same size, takes up the same space no matter what container you put it in
What is needed to change the state of matter? a change in temperature
The change of a liquid to a solid freezing
The change of a solid to a gas sublimation
The change of a gas to a liquid condensation
The change of a liquid to a gas evaporation
The change of a solid to a liquid melting
The change of gas to solid deposition
Which phase changes require heat to be absorbed (warmed up)? sublimation, melting, evaporation
Which phase changes require heat to be removed (cooled down)? freezing, condensation, deposition
During which phase change do atoms move slower and closer together? freezing, condensation, deposition
During which phase change do atoms move faster and farther apart? sublimation, melting, evaporation
Describe a physical change. no change in matter or composition, same matter as was there at the start, only appearance changes
Describe a chemical change. matter or composition change into something new, hard or impossible to reverse, has ability to react
Examples of physical change bending, breaking, dissolving, melting
Examples chemical change/properties reactivity, flammable, oxidation, rustable, combustible
What is a chemical reaction? chemical change, atoms rearrange themselves
When two atoms collide, they ______ with one another react
Define Reactants A starting matter in a chemical reaction (what you mix together)
Define Products matter produced or created by a chemical reaction.
What are indicators of a chemical reaction? gas formed(bubbles), color change, solid formed (precipitate), temperature change
What is a precipitate? A solid that forms from two liquids during a chemical reaction.
What does Exothermic mean? Releases heat, increases temperature
What does Endothermic mean? Absorbs heat, decreases temperature
How can you increase a reactions speed? increase temperature, stir/mix, crush it up, increase amount or concentration
What does "conservation of matter" mean? matter cannot be created or destroyed (always stays the same)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
