Displaying and Interpreting Data

TermDefinition
Bar Graph A picture used to compare data that can be put into separate groups
Circle Graph A diagram that shows how much of a whole a certain part represents, also called a pie chart.
Interpret To figure out the meaning of a set of data.
Line Graph An organizer showing how data changes over time.
Median The middle value in a group of numbers arranged in order or, if there is an even number of values, the average of the two middle values
Mode The number in a data set that appears the most often
Model an object or explanation that represents and simplifies a system
Mean In a data set, the average of all the number values; the sum of the data points divided by the number of data points.
System an organized group of related objects that form a whole
Range A number that tells how much the data in a set is spread out; it is found by subtracting the largest number in a data set from the smallest number.
Venn Diagram A diagram used to show how sets of data are grouped and what the data have in common.
