What are stimulus-gated channels? Are ion channels that open in response to chemicals produced by a sensory stimulus or chemical stimulus received from another neuron.
What are neurotransmitters? are how neurons talk to one another and are classified by function or chemical structure.
What are the three layers (meninges) of the covering the brain? 1. Dura Mater 2. Arachoid mater 3. Pia mater
What are the 6 major divisions of the brain? medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain, cerebellum, diencephalon, and cerebrum
What is the brainstem? medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain
What does the sympathetic division consists of? neural pathways that are separate from the parasympathetic pathways.
What controls the intestinal wall? The enteric nervous system which is a part of the ANS. It is made up of a complex network of nerve plexuses buried
Describe dynamic equilibrium Is a function needed to maintain balance when the head or body itself is rotated or suddenly moved. Consists of the sense organs associated with the semicircular ducts.
Explain the lock and key mechanism Hormones travel throughout the body via the blood. Hormones don't act on any receptor, each hormone binds to specific receptors that fit them exactly. This is referred to as the target of that hormone.
What are tropic hormones? Give examples Tropic hormones are hormones that have a stimulation effect on other endocrine glands. Ex: TSH, ACTH, FSH, and LH
What does plasma consist of? Extracellular matrix of blood tissue
What is whole blood? Includes the plasma, formed elements, and buffy coat (leukocytes)
Name the granulocytes Neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils
What makes up the conduction system of the heart? SA node, AV node, AV bundle, and Purkinje fibers
What's the difference between innate immunity and adaptive immunity Innate immunity is in place before a person is exposed to a particular harmful particle or condition. Adaptive immunity involves mechanisms that recognize specific threatening agents and then adapt by targeting their activity against these agents.
What is tidal volume? The volume of air exhaled normally after a typical inspiration
What are the mechanisms of the digestive system? Ingestion, digestion, motility, secretion, absorption, elimination, and regulation
