Words and Definitions.

QuestionAnswer
Atom the basic unit of measure
Element pure substance that consists of one type of atom
Molecule smallest unit of a compound
Covalent Bond type of bond between atoms in which the electrons are shared
polar molecule One end of the molecule is slightly negative and slightly positive ( works well w/water)
non-polar molecule An equal sharing of charge. ( doesn't work well w/water)
Hydrogen Bond weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and another atom
Cohesion An attraction between molecules of the same substance
Adhesion Force of attraction between different kinds of molecules
Capillary Action tendency of water to rise in a thin tube due to adhesion and cohesion
reactants Elements or compounds that enter into a chemical reaction
products Elements or compounds produced by a chemical
independent variable factor in a controlled experiment that is deliberately changed; also called manipulated variable ( eg: type of fertilizer for the tree)
dependent variable Variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable ( EG: Height of a tree due to type of fertilizer)
Qualitative ( data) Information describing color, odor, shape, or some other physical characteristic
Quantitative (data) Data associated with mathematical models and statistical techniques used to analyze spatial location and association.
Sub-atomic Particle inside atoms
Macromolecule very large molecules only produced by living cells
Organelle Specialized part inside of a cell ( Mitochondria, DNA, RNA)
Cell smallest unit of life
Tissue a group of similar cells working together
Organ a group of tissues working together
Organ system a group of organs working together
Organism A living thing ( human, fish, bacterium)
polar covalent bond unequal sharing of electrons
physical change Bonds are not broken/formed
Chemical change The number of each type of atom is the same in reactant and product side
Cellular respiration oxygen+glucose = energy+carbon Dioxide+water
Photosynthesis Carbon dioxide +water = oxygen+ glucose
HONC-1234 number of bonds they form
Monomer Small Chemical Unit that makes up a polymer
Polymer Molecules composed of many monomers; make up a macromolecule
synthesis A chemical reaction where monomers join to build a polymer. Water is formed
Degradation A chemical reaction where a polymer breaks into many monomers. Water is used.
Nucleic Acid Are molecules containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus.
Carbohydrates Compound made up of Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms
Monosaccharides Simple sugar molecules
Glucose type of sugar
Polysaccharides large macromolecules formed from monosaccharides
Lipids Macromolecules made mostly from carbon, and hydrogen atoms.
Triglycerides Three glycerol molecules together.
protein Macromolecule that contains carbon, hydrogens, oxygen, and nitrogen.
Amino Acid Compound with an amino group on one end and a carboxyl group on the other
Polypeptide Long chain of amino acids that make proteins.
hydrophilic Attracted to water
Hydrophobic fear of water

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
