TermDefinition
Cytoplasm Clear thick jelly like material that protects and supports the cell organelles. Found in both plant and animal cells
Cell Basic unit of structure and function in an organism
Nucleus Controls cell activities and contains hereditary materials. Found in both plant and animal cells
Cell Wall Rigid outer layer that protects and supports a plant cell
Vacuole Stores food, water, metabolic and toxic waste. Is larger in plants than animal cells
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell. Breaks down sugar molecules into energy.
Organelles Tiny cellular structure that performs specific functions within a cell
Chloroplast Contains chlorophyll [green pigment] and uses the sun to make food. Only in plant cells, this is where photosynthesis takes place
Cell Membrane Controls movement of materials in and out of the cell. Found in both animal and plant cells, is semipermeable
What are the two reactants needed for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide and water
What are the two products of photosynthesis? Glucose and oxygen
Xylem Transports water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. Found in vascular plants
Phloem Transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Found in vascular plants
What is the equation for photosynthesis? 6 CO2 + 6H2O -[energy from sun]- C6H12O6 + 6O2. Carbon + water -[energy from sun] - glucose + oxygen
What is the equation for respiration? C6H12O6 + 6O2 - 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy Glucose + oxygen - carbon + water + energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
