The future of an ageing population

| government policies | a set of ideas or plans proposed by politicians that is used as a basis for making decisions in a given country |
| population density | the concentration of individuals within a specific area |
| inhabitant | a person living in a particular place |
| demographic growth | the increase in the number of people in a population |
| population census | the official counting of the population in a given country |
| basic demographic indicators | factors that are used to analyse the population of a territory |
| crude birth rate | the number of births per 1,000 inhabitants |
| total fertility rate | the average number of children per woman |
| crude death rate | the number of deaths per 1,000 inhabitants |
| the rate of natural increase | the difference between the number of births and deaths |
| net migration rate | the difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants |
| immigrant | a person who has come to a different country in order to live there permanently |
| emigrant | a person who leaves a country permanently to live in another one |
| real increase | the sum of the rate of natural increase and the net migration rate |
| population structure | the composition of the population according to age groups and sex |
| population explosion | a sudden, large increase in the size of the population |
| developing country | a country with little industrial and economic activity and where people generally have low incomes |
| anti-natalist policies | regulations that seek to limit the number of births, and lower a country's population growth rate |
| contraceptives | a device or drug serving to prevent pregnancy |
| forecast | a calculation or estimate of future events |
| income | the money that you earn and receive on a regular basis |
| demographic ageing | the phenomenon when the proportion of elderly population increases |
| life expectancy | the number of years a person can expect to live |
| sanitation | the promotion of hygiene and prevention of disease by maintenance of sanitary conditions (as by removal of sewage and waste) |
| state expenditure | the amount of money that the government spends in total |
| welfare | a government program for poor or unemployed people that helps pay for their food, housing, medical costs |
| state revenue | the amount of money collected by the government in the form of taxes, fines and charges for services |
| pension | a regular payment made by the state to people of the official retirement age |
| consumption | the act of using goods and services in an economy |
| elderly dependency rate | the ratio between the population aged 65 and over and the working age population |
| migration | the movement of a person from their place of origin to another destination |
| leisure | the use of free time for enjoyment |
| ethnic persecution | unfair or cruel treatment over a long period of time because of a person's ethnicity |
| refugee | a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution or natural disaster |
| unemployment | a state in which a person is willing and able to work but does not have a paid job |
| multiculturalism | the presence of several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society |
| racism | prejudice or discrimination against a person on the basis of their race or ethnicity |
| xenophobia | fear and hatred of foreigners and people from different cultures |
| rural exodus | migration from the countryside to the city in search of better conditions of life |
