SCIENCE CHAPTER 6 UNIT 10 VOCABULARY # 1

TermDefinition
Environment all the living and nonliving elements in nature.
Ecosystem all the communities of living and nonliving parts in a particular place at the same time.
Harmless the opposite of harmful; doesn’t hurt the environment.
Benefit/beneficial an advantage; a good thing.
Harmful something that is bad, hurtful.
Biology the science of the study of living or once-living organisms.
Natural events events that are caused by nature. Exam. Hurricanes, tornado, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, etc.
Human causes events that are caused by people. Exam. Pollution, threatened, endangered, or extinct organisms
Deforestation cutting down many trees/forests- human activity
Acid Rain a weak acid in the atmosphere due to pollution that attaches to rain drops.
Domino Effect when something changes in an ecosystem and it affects other organisms.
Bacteria single-celled organism that we need a microscope to see. We have good and bad ones.
Antibiotics medicine to help fight bacterial infections.
Offspring the animal babies or new plants that come from reproduction.
Pollution the effect of harmful substances that get into the air, water, and ground
Conserve/conservation to save, protect.
Landfill the area that garbage is taken to where it is burned & buried.
Drought when an area gets much less rain/precipitation than usual.
Flooding caused by when an area gets much more rain/precipitation
Impact the effect that a living organism or event has on its ecosystem
Pollutants/pollution the harmful substances that harm the environment & cause pollution to air, soil, and water.
Species one type of organisms. Exam: red ants, white rhinos, black ants.
